There are 5am Ashtanga yogis, noontime lunch-breakers, moonlit practitioners and everything in between. Just as no two yogis are identical, every time of day inspires a different type of practice. I love my sun salutations (Surya Namaskar) to build heat, energy and movement, but even while maintaining the powerful Vinyasa practice, there’s space to balance sun salutations with their calmer moon salutation counterpart. Chandra Namaskar focuses on lunges, flowing back arches and grounding movement rather that warrior postures.
Mentions of the moon go back into ancient yogic texts, but the Moon Salutations we know are relative toddlers to the yoga practice, developed mid-20th century. More recently Shiva Rae popularized this gentle and fluid Chandra Namaskar.
